Sheringham is laid out high on the clifftops on a thin stretchr of land, between the North Sea cliffs and the North Norfolk Railway. Ssteam trains and vintage diesels occasionally pass the course, which is set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The club was originally founded in 1891 as nine holes, extended to eighteen holes in 1898. The best holes are undoubtedly those that run close to the edge of the cliffs. The English Ladies Close Amateur Championship has been played at Sheringham on three occasions. In the 1920 event, Joyce Wethered prevailed - It was on the old 17th green, set close to the railway fence that she laid a long putt dead to make certain of her first championship, studying the line with such intensity of concentration as to be completely oblivious of the 4.20 train out of Sheringham rattling past behind her.
