West Kilbride

6,452 yards • Par 71

There are many fine links courses along the 30 mile stretch of Ayr coastline between Turnberry and Irvine, notably the Ailsa, Kintyre, Prestwick, Barassie, Bogside, Western Gailes & Glasgow Gailes. But just ten miles to the north lies the fine links course of West Kilbride, which is often overlooked due to its slight separation from the rest. Located at Seamill on the north Ayrshire coast, with spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde and across to the Isle of Arran and beyond to the Mull of Kintyre, West Kilbride was founded in 1893.
James Braid, five times Open champion and one of Scotland's greatest course architects twice had a hand in the design of the current layout, having helped extend the original Old Tom Morris 9 hole in 1914.
The early holes on the course are played on higher ground away from the coast and they have an upland feel, despite the presence of gorse and heather on the sides of the fairways. The course really gets the pulse going around the turn and from then on, it just keeps getting better, with most holes hugging the rugged coastline.
