Imagine standing on the cliffs at Scotland's most southerly point, breathing the fresh ocean air, watching as seabirds glide below, listening to the crash of the waves and looking out to the horizon and seeing Ireland, England and the Isle of Man, silhouetted against the setting sun. Or picture yourself walking along a quiet beach, a fine meal and the warmth of the local "water of life" as your stresses melt away. That's what Dumfires & Galloway is all about.
Your base for this delicious tour is the fascinating and genuinely pretty Scottish harbour town of Kirkcudbright. Known as "The Artists' Town" for its association with famous artists for the past 100 years, the town is very much a thriving centre of contemporary art and crafts today. You can enjoy wandering around the numerous Art Galleries to nosing through second hand bookshops, and sampling its many bars & restaurants.
As for the golf, the most well known links golf in the west of Scotland may be largely contained along the Ayrshire coast but the area just to the south along the Dumfries coast offers examples of where the best traditional golf can be found. Links golf where you'll find uncrowded fairways & views to take your breath away, A warm Scottish welcome awaits you and best of all, this tour offers genuine value for money.
We begin our golfing odyysey at Southerness, truly one of Scotland's hidden golf assets, with its spectacular views across the coast of Galloway and to the mountains of the Lake District. Powfoot is another classic Scottish links laid out alongside the Solway Firth. Like all courses in this part of the world you are invariably faced with empty fairways and the opportunity to play relaxed and contemplative golf.
Brighouse Bay is hidden away within 1, 200 acres on a quiet peninsula; this beautifully situated course has superb springy turf, playable all year round and offers glorious clifftop views over the Irish sea. Situated in South West Scotland on the shores of Loch Ryan, the delightful parkland course at Stranraer is set on gently undulating ground. It affords exceptional views over the loch to Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran and beyond.
Our final game takes you over the Scottish borders and into the wonderfully wild county of Cumbria, on the north east coast of England - and it's well worth it. Silloth-on-Solway Golf Club in Cumbria was founded in 1892. The links were inspired by some of golf's great architects and well deserves its position in the top 50 and one of Britain's top 10 links courses. Located at the mouth of the Solway Firth, and with heather & gorse adding splashes of seasonal colour, this is just a cracking links course.
Dumfries is also the homeland of Robbie Burns, Scotland's National Bard. Inspired by the land he loved and the women he wooed, Burns wrote some of his most memorable work in Dumfries & Galloway and there are many places to visit today which celebrate their historical connections with him.
Dumfries & Galloway is simply a unique and wonderfully unspoiled part of Scotland, and offer you a glimpse into a way of life unaltered for hundreds of years...the golf's not half bad either

| Brighouse Bay |
Brighouse Bay is a championship course 6 miles south west of the Artists' Town of Kirkcudbright Perched imposingly above the beautiful Solway coastline, this championship course is a testing cliff-top links, with spectacular views over the the rolling Galloway countryside, and the Irish Sea stretching to the Isle of Man. The natural coastal terrain and water hazards provide an enjoyable experience for all golfers. The combination of breathtaking scenery and unique golf holes make Brighouse Bay Golf Course the perfect setting for a golf trip |
| Powfoot |
This course was founded in 1903, designed by James Braid and ranked among the best, yet remains utterly unspoilt and worthy of "the best kept secret". The first nine holes present a stiff links test and the final nine encompass a mixture of links and heathland, with whins and rough ensuring the challenge continues to the end. When the wind blows off the Irish Sea and the Solway Firth, the golfing prowess
of even the best golfer will be severely tested. The course presents some breathtaking views over The Solway Firth to the North Lakes Mountains and the hills adjacent to Dumfries
| Silloth |
Situated on the north west coast of Cumbria, Silloth on Solway Golf Club is blessed with stunning views of the Galloway Hills to the north, and south to the Lakeland fells and the distant Isle of Man. The Championship links has been laid out over the sand-hills west of town, touched by some of the great classical golf architects, but mostly moulded by Nature herself. It is currently one of the R & A Regional Qualifying Courses for the Open. Hazards consist of heather and bent; whin and broom; heroic bunkers and sandy wastes. Fairways are always wider than they seem from the tee, and having been laid with springy Cumberland turf, invite courageous fairway woods and crisp iron shots. Greens are subtle, firm, fast, and deadly true.
| Southerness |
Southerness Golf Course was designed by McKenzie Ross, and built in 1947. Another hidden gem, this is a true Championship Links course. It is situated on the Solway coast giving panoramic views of the Solway Firth, the Cumbrian Lake District to the south, and the Galloway Hills to the west. Being totally remote from large centres of population you get a feeling of perfect isolation. This feeling is enhanced by the course design which means that players are seldom aware of others on the course. Southerness has been recognised by "Golf Monthly", who have included Southerness in their list of top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland each year since 1990.

| Stranraer |
Stranraer has the distinction of being the last course designed by the great James Braid before his death. Set on the shores of Loch Ryan, a saltwater loch that is the main ferry gateway from Scotland to Northern Ireland, Stranraer is laid out on former pastureland with many stands of mature trees. It offers undulating ground and exceptional views over the loch to Ailsa Craig, the Isle of Arran and beyond. Visiting golfers find the course a delight throughout the year. The warm wash of the Gulf Stream provides the region with a mild climate making play possible on all but a handful of days. A game on this skillfully designed course, complemented by fine hospitality, will remain etched in your memory. |
