A visit here is a must for all golfers. Set in the picturesque village of Swanage on the South coast, the Purbeck Championship Course proves an exciting test for the most accomplished golfer. Built on heathland and set within a nature reserve, the Purbeck course is well manicured and abounds with heather and gorse, with incredible views at every hole.

Views to die for

The Isle of Purbeck is a surprising, honest and delightful course to play. The views from most places on the course are worth the visit alone. From the top of the heathland plateau you have uninterrupted views to the south, across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, to the east across Poole Bay you can see Bournemouth, to the north Brownsea Island lies the other side of Poole Harbour and beyond and to the west you have the Purbeck Hills.

A touch of history

The Club dates back to 1892 and was modified at the turn of the  century by one of the great architects, Harry Colt. Among the past ownders, who were responsible for its extension to 27 holes, were Enid Blyton, the legendary writer of children's books and her husband Dr Darrel Waters, a consultant of distinction. Design-wise, this is not exactly a links course but it does require the same  skills of  controlling and rolling the ball, of trying to outwit the elements and tame the course.

Hidden gem status

We firmly believe that Purbeck deserves its hidden gem status, and we are not alone in singing its praises. Here are some comments from media celebrities:

Peter Allis (comments made at a dinner in the clubhouse)

"Look out gentlemen - wherever you are in the world, yoiu may see its equal but you will never see anything finer!"

Barry Took

"I was amazed. I found true delight in the wonderful views, air so fresh it was as if it had been newly laundered..".
