A wee gem

A wee gem of a links, Strandhill Golf Club was founded in 1931, and members played on the 9 hole layout for 40 years till Eddie Hackett extended the course to 18 holes in 1973. Though short, the wind forces you to use every club in your bag, and if you can safely negotiate the towering sand dunes and doglegs, the many contours on the greens will make you grateful for every par that comes your way.

Romancing "the stone"

Set alongside Sligo Bay and under the shadows of the Knocknarea, 'Moon Mountain' - with an enormous stone structure at its top, Strandhill provides an inspired setting for a game of golf. It is always maintained to a really high standard and on a summer evening, there is no finer setting for a game of golf.

Strandhill's 5675 metres of undulating fairways and unforgiving short cuts provides golfers ample challenge, while players will relish the spectacular setting made famous in Song and Story. With 100 foot high dunes, rippling greens, the ocean, the bay, Knocknarea mountains in the background, you'll relish a visit here.

Instant love affair

Christy O'Connor Snr on his first visit to the course described it as "The hidden jewel of the West"

"On a bright, sunny spring day, the 18-hole duneland stretch at Strandhill can be a heavenly location... Bad shots are quickly forgotten about amid the grandeur of the surrounding countryside, dominated by the rugged beauty of Ben Bulben."
- Dermot Gilleece, The Irish Times

"Strandhill has some wonderful holes... This is your true, old-fashioned links."
- The Evening Herald
