WEST ALGARVE PACKAGES
| |
| |
The Western side of the Algarve, with the delightful fishing villages of Alvor, Carvoeira and Lagos, provides the golfer with some excellent courses that are unlikely to be quite as busy as the Vilamoura courses. The area is a mix of the traditional and modern with some fantastic coastlines, countryside and historical sites to explore.
The Western Algarve is also the classic, photogenic Algarve, the one beloved by designers of both travel brochures and geographical magazines. This is particularly true of the coast around Lagos, where wonderful beaches nestle in small bays and coves surrounded by limestone cliffs and weird, erosion-formed caves, grottoes and rock formations, which often spring picturesquely out of the water.
Oone of the only ways to reserve teetimes at San Lorenzo, generally rated to be THE top course on the Algarve, is through booking at the Merdien Penina 5 star resort, so if you want to play the best course, then why not stay at one of the best hotels !
Palmares is another of our personal favourites, with a lovely run of holes alongside the sea, before you head back into the hills and play amongst orange groves & fig trees.
For a totally relaxing stay, we think you can't go wrong with the delightful Tivoli Lagos hotel right in the heart of the ancient and picturesque city of Lagos.
Whatever your choice, the Western Algarve has something for everyone.

Alamos |
Characterised by two large lakes and great views of the Monchique mountains, Golfe Dos Alamos, is the second course to be developed at the Morgados do Reguengo project, north of Portimao, on the Portuguese Algarve. Set beside its sister course 'Morgado' in beautiful un spoilt rolling countryside, Dos Alamos provides a delightful variety of holes. It has some tightly undulating fairways and greens with testing slopes.Whilst the course is not as long as Morgado, it has half the number of bunkers. Do not be deceived because it has been cleverly protected with trees coming into play even before you get to the greens! At 6200 yards, par 71, and with a varied landscape, the course runs next to two large lakes, through wide valleys and has superb views of the Monchique mountain range to the north of the project.

Boavista |
Boavista Golf opened on 1st January 2002, the impressive 18 Hole Championship golf course has been designed by Howard Swan MSc, past president of The European Institute of Golf Course Architects. His philosophy - to create a course as if it has always been there - has been sensitively applied at Boavista, preserving, integrating and harmonising with the area's natural terrain. With two distinctive sections the course offers a variety of holes commencing with the welcoming first hole, a meandering downhill par-4, bordered by beautiful sub-tropical landscaping leading to harmoniously designed properties.
The signature hole on the outward nine is the stunning par-4, 7th hole set against a glorious backdrop of the Atlantic ocean with exhilarating panoramic views extending from Praia da Luz round to with the hills at Monchique creating a spectacular backdrop.

Morgado |
The Morgado golf course is one of the longest in the Algarve at 6,399 metres, characterised by 9 undulating holes with spectacular views and 9 flatter holes dominated by water hazards. In all, there are five par 5 holes, nine par 4's and four par 3's. Morgado is quite new and was opened in 2003. Situated North of Portimao it is situated on a vast 980 hectare estate through undulating small valleys. The large open greens will demand good putting skills. Also there are deep bunkers so players must be accurate. The spacious Clubhouse has inspiring views over the course. From the south terrace you can see the entire driving range and twelve of the eighteen holes. There's a restaurant, bar, grill, changing facilities and pro shop. |
Penina |
Situated in the heart of the Algarve, the championship course at Penina is considered the most brilliant project of Sir Henry Cotton. This was also the first golf course to be built in the Algarve, back in 1966. The Penina Championship Course has several bunkers, almost four hundred thousand trees, plenty of water with wide greens and a vast tee area. Over the years the 350,000 trees Sir Henry planted have grown to turn Penina into magnificent woodland. With the trees came an array of local wildlife and today Penina is a stunningly beautiful and peaceful place and one of the great golf resorts in Europe. It is a fairly flat parkland course with many bunkers, several lakes and spacious greens. Penina has been host to the Portuguese Open on several occasions and a notable
feature on the back nine is the four par 5s.

San Lorenzo |
The superb and well frequented San Lorenzo Golf Course, designed by Joseph Lee and owned by Le Meridien Dona Filipa, has long been regarded as one of the best golf courses in Europe. The course is unique when it comes to outstanding views, a calm and tranquil setting, and shows nature at its best. The golf club is a member of the Audubon Co-operative Sanctuary System. The course features large fast greens and undulating fairways which meander through avenues of pine trees. There are some spectacular holes overlooking the sea, which border lakes abundant with wildlife. The daunting 18th, with a semi-island green, to quote a cliché, is one of the best finishing holes in golf. San Lorenzo is beautifully maintained and set in an unspoilt area of natural beauty. |
Palmares |
This spectacular 18 hole golf course is in the Ria Formosa Natural Park and spreads down to the Ria Formosa itself, hanging over it and with a stunning view of the sea. It is a par 72, comprising two loops of 9 holes. Five lakes were strategically built along the course, and the 17th green is bordered by one of these lakes where an island with various bird fauna may be found. The greens, smoothly undulating, are well protected by bunkers. More than 300 trees, such as olive and carob have been transplanted in order to maintain the ancient border of the course and the typical features of the region's landscape. From anywhere on the course, you can see both mountains and the sea, and the surrounding orange trees and vineyards just add to the spectacular landscape. |
Parque da Floresta |
Parque da Floresta is one of Europe's most spectacular golf courses and is the ideal location for golf holidays in the Algarve. With no two holes remotely similar, the variety and appeal of this unique course are endless, and one round will not be sufficient to appreciate its imaginative design. Meandering through the undulating terrain, it offers fantastic views of the surrounding Algarve countryside and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. In recent years there has been considerable investment made in the course, including the addition of a golf academy and the redesign of several holes. From the opening par 4 that curves gracefully towards the early morning sun, to the majestic par 4 eighteenth set in a natural amphitheatre below the Clubhouse terrace, this course has already become famous for having some classic golf holes. |
