EAST ALGARVE PACKAGES
| |
| |
The Eastern Algarve offers a certain style and traditional charm that is characteristic of the Portuguese way of life and their friendly nature.
The development of golf resorts along this stretch of coastline has been slower than that experienced in other parts of Europe, however, the quality of the courses rivals anywhere.
With 5 fine clubs to choose from, this area is an excellent choice for your next Algarve golf tour. One of the Algarve’s oldest cities, located at the mouth of the River Gilao, Tavira is a fishing port dating from Moorish times. Nearby is one of Portugal’s most important nature reserves, the Reserva do Sapal, one of the few parts of the Algarve where the natural environment has been preserved and the cultural and historical heritage is much in evidence.
Off the course there is a wealth of restaurants, serving some fine seafood and delightful local wines, Moorish ruins and castles to explore, and if you love to amble, then why not find one of the secluded beaches that dot the length of the coastline. To capture the essence of Portugal, combining first class and quiet golf courses with delightful hotels and food, the eastern Algarve is hard to beat.

HOTELS |

Vila Galé, Tavira |
The opening of this new hotel in Tavira and the growing reputation of the new Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima courses has led to a significant rise in the popularity of the Eastern Algarve as a golf destination. All rooms are spacious, modern in design and fully equipped with facilities. Guests can look forward to similar amentities and the same golf orientated service bestowed by the Vila Galé Ampalius. It has a lovely large outdoor pool which is surronded by loungers, the perfect way to spend an afternoon after a round of morning golf or for those cooler winter months there is an indoor pool. All the Tavira's rooms are well furnished and tastefully decorated in shades of blue and white, with terracotta floor tiling in keeping with the authentic Portuguese style of the hotel. The hotel has one main restaurant which is split into two parts, one half serves buffet and the other serves a la carte. If you fancy venturing out, the hotel is close to the centre of town where you will find some excellent cuisine, especially traditional Portuguese. |

Quinta da Ria |
Designed by Rocky Roquemore, Quinta da Ria opened its doors in March 2002 to rave reviews. The course winds its way around a handful of man-made lakes and ancient olive trees. One of two Par 72 golf courses, the other being the excellent Quinta da Cima, Quinta da Ria extends itself in a spectacular location along the coast of the eastern Algarve, Quinta da Ria Golf Club is situated in the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and has already been described as one of the most beautiful courses in the region. In fact, perched above the estuary, the views down to the sand below, with the tidal waters and the ever flowing currents are quite breathtaking. The back nine encircle the perimeter of the course and are in complete contrast to the front nine, offering not only some spectacular views but much more contrast. Well worth the trip east !

Quinta de Cima |
On the other side of the road from Quinta da Ria, there's Quinta de Cima. This new sister course to Quinta da Ria is of a Championship character which will provide an enjoyable challenge for most players. Set in rolling land dotted with almond trees it provides open fairways, well placed bunkers and enough water to attract the odd misdirected golf ball. Although they're very close together, the two courses offer very different challenges. They do have one thing in common though - they're both golfing gems. Quinta de Cima only provides distant glimpses of the sea and is hillier, longer and tougher than its neighbour, with lots of bunkers and very tricky greens. A stream with a number of small waterfalls crosses the 4th, 5th, 6th and 13th fairways and turns into a lake on the signature 18th.

Benamor |
Designed by Sir Henry Cotton, Benamor was the first course built east of Faro in the Algarve. There are views to the Atlantic and Tavira Island to the south and towards the hills and valleys in the north. A few minutes drive from Tavira, Benamor is set in groves of olive, cork, carob and almond trees on the lower slopes of the hills and there are striking mountain and sea views. The rolling terrain and widely varying holes provide an interesting test of your game. There are many strategically placed bunkers and water hazards so precision off the tee and on the approach shots is an absolute must. A big plus point is the absence (to date) of holiday villas and apartments. The course length is modest, so Benamor offers a gentle, peaceful and fairly undemanding round.

Castro Marim |
Located on the Algarve in Portugal, close to the historic town of Castro Marim the course runs through undulating hills dotted with pines and occasional views across the River Guadiana to neighbouring Spain.Castro Marim is carved out of predominantly pine woodland and set in rolling terrain against a hilly backdrop. There are impressive views of the nearby River Guadiana and the Atlantic Ocean. The course designer, Terry Murray, has used the natural ground cleverly and visitors are advised to be wary of a sometimes deceptive landscape. The clever layout demands accurate play and astute club selection. Opened in 2000 as the first phase of a luxury resort, we're sure Castro Marim is destined to become a firm favourite with UK golfers. Buggies recommended. |
Monte Rei |
Located in the lush, unspoilt countryside between the dramatic Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Monte Rei is a relaxing haven in a still relatively undeveloped part of the Algarve. The first of two planned 18-hole courses, this Jack Nicklaus-designed par 72 Championship course is a truly unique design, with water coming into play on eleven of the eighteen holes. Monte Rei features an enjoyable series of eight par-4s, five par-3s and five par-5s in a challenging and distinctive layout. The course presentation is highly individual, each hole a design gem blending effortlessly into this natural canvas, from its ingenious shape and sculptured bunkers, to the impressive presentation and attention to detail making ever hole as remarkable as the next; fairways and greens are bordered by several lakes, indigenous plants, native grasses and trees adding drama to the landscape, and providing golfers with unforgettable moments to cherish.
