WEST COAST PORTUGAL PACKAGES

When people mention Portugal and golf, they automatically think of Algarve, but we have a lovely alternative for you, in the form of the Estoril coast, just to the West of Lisbon. The Estoril & Sintra Golf Coast, with its big sandy beaches, has nine superb golf courses to choose from. This unique part of Europe, just half an hour from Lisbon’s International Airport, offers good weather all year round and a wonderful varied coastline.

Whether you decide to stay in the city of Lisbon itself or spend your golfing holiday based along the lovely Estoril coastline, you will not be short of things to see and do. Lisbon, the capital city of Portugal, stretches along the banks of the Tagus river. The city has many fine buildings with facades clad in ornate ceramic tiles and the fortress from which Lisbon first developed is surrounded by mediaeval streets. Trams run through the city adding to its charm and there are plenty of good shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy as well as fantastic nightlife along the river banks.

On the outskirts of the city are the cosmopolitan, seaside resorts of Estoril and Cascais with their numerous shops, restaurants and bars. Enjoy the Casino in Estoril for an evening out or spend some time walking along the marina in Cascais. The famous beach of Guincho is only a few minutes away for those who enjoy surfing or windsurfing. Or take the local train into the centre of Lisbon itself for a great day or evening out.

Cross over the river and travel south of Lisbon through the quiet countryside of the Costa Azul to Sesimbra, a picturesque fishing town with a mediaeval castle on top of the hill, and enjoy a more gentle life style. This seaside resort is popular with the Portuguese and the restaurants serving traditional food are well worth an evening out!

That could be why this area is becoming such a popular golfing destination !

GOLF

Quinta da Marinha

Robert Trent Jones' well-established 1984 seaside course, mainly level parkland and heathland with several lakes, and views to the nearby Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra mountains. The Quinta da Marinha course is set in a private estate of 110 hectares, wooded with pine trees. The architect has worked on the flat terrain, laying out the course over 6,071 metres for a Par 71.  For most of the course, however, the fairways face inland with the beautiful outline of the Sintra mountain range forming their background. Many bunkers and a number of lakes give you plenty to think about the whole way round.  The 10th, for instance, has a green entirely surrounded by water. Opened in December 1999, the Quinta da Marinha Hotel is ideally situated.behind the 10th green of the Quinta da Marinha golf course
Oitavos

A new course that has been widely hailed as one of the finest courses in Portugal, and one of the best links courses in mainland Europe, Despite it's youth, it is already ranked 33 in Golf World's "Top 100 Courses in Europe". A genuine links challenge next to the Atlantic Ocean.  Oitavos Golf, set in Quinta da Marinha, lies within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. It is set among pine woods and reforested dunes, in an area of great natural beauty. Being a seaside golf course, the ocean view is present all the time, although some of the more fantastic scenery come from the Sintra mountains and Cabo da Roca, the most western point in Europe. The layout has been carefully crafted by one of the great golf architects, Arthur Hills. Hills has maintained and preserved the unique caracteristics of the land, retaining much of the flora and fauna peculiar to the region.

Penha Longa

This Robert Trent Jones Jr. course is well established as one of Portugal's top half-dozen courses, and a must for most visiting golfers to the Lisbon area. Laid out over mountain foothills, around a 14th century palace, many historic features remain, including an ancient aqueduct behind the 6th green. Tucked away at the foot of the Sintra Hills, Penha Longa is a startlingly beautiful place. The course rides a rollercoaster route up and over the hills from where there are awe-inspiring views over the Atlantic (Golf World 2001). Set within the protected area of Sintra and Cascais, the Penha Longa Atlantic Course combines this undulating terrain with excellent sea and mountain views and is ranked 27th in Europe by Golf World Magazine.

Estoril

Estoril was laid out in 1945 by Mackenzie Ross, famous for his restoration of Turnberry. Wooded, undulating parkland with sea views. Internationally famous for its location near the luxurious beach resort of Estoril, a number of alterations have been made to its original layout. The architect has made excellent use of the pine trees and eucalyptuses, which together with the uneven terrain make this course challenging in terms of accuracy rather than distance. It is a short course, covering 5,200 metres for a Par 69, providing an engrossing challenge. The 16th is internationally well known; a Par 3 of 184 metres. The Estoril course hosted the Portuguese Open Championship between 1953 and 1972, and also in 1977 and 1987, as well as several non-Pro international Championships. For that reason famous golfers of the calibre of Ramon Sota, Max Faulkner, Seve Ballesteros, Bernard Gallacher, Peter Alliss and many others have played here.

Beloura

The foothills of the Sintra Mountains offer a breathtaking backdrop to the Quinta da Beloura Golf Course. The course, designed by the famous American golf course architect Rocky Roquemore, will stretch both your imagination and your golfing skills, providing an enjoyable challenge to golfers of all levels. This is a gently undulating Par 73, 18 hole course, measuring 5,774 metres from the Men's Tees and 5,173 from the Ladies Tees. The course has been planted with over 40,000 trees and flowers, including eucalyptus, oak, pine, magnolia, palm and other exotic species. Water comes into play on many of the holes as meander between the various lakes and streams that border the fairways. The course is irrigated automatically by its own water supply. This guarantees crisp lies on lush turf on all the fairways and true, holding greens.
Belas

A winding challenging golf course, with spectacular views of the Sintra Hills. This golf course is generally considered to be among the best courses in Portugal.  The course is divided into two parts - the first section passes through a naturally preserved landscape, and the second section runs by some houses that are part of the development but shielded by the planting of one thousand trees. This course was designed by US architect William 'Rocky' Roquemore. The par 72 championship course has five lakes set in the midst of its winding layout, fed by various small and picturesque watercourses. It is like an enormous nature reserve and meanders through the rising hills and valleys of the Carregueira Mountains. It is a pleasure to play whatever your handicap level and is acknowledged both locally and internationally as one of Portugal's best constructed layouts.
Lisbon Sports Club
Situated very close to Lisbon, the course blends harmoniously into a romantic lanscape of dense vegetation. It demands both skill and imagination because of a watercourse which strongly influences at least twelve of the holes. At the first hole, a par 3, come a number of difficulties - woods to the left, stream to the right and bunkers on both sides - will challenge the player from even the first shot. Then, before the golfer is properly warmed up, they have to face another par 3 at the third, though this time of even greater difficulty due to its 180m length. Up until the final hole (a tricky par 4 crossed in the middle by a stream), the player can enjoy unforgettable contact with nature, and admire the cypresses, the eucalyptuses and wild flowers, while at the same time facing up to shots that will stretch their imagination.
