  Sightseeing and Shopping

The most famous destination in Cheshire is Roman Chester. With 2,000 years of history, this is one of Europe’s top heritage cities – and it is easy to see why!  Chester boasts a complete circuit of walls, sections of which date back to Roman times, as well as a Norman Cathedral. The famous Rows, unique two-tiered galleries built in the traditional black and white ‘magpie’ style, contain a wide range of shops selling goods from antiques to high fashion. In fact the city is one of the top retail centres in the UK, boasting large branches of national stores and attractive shopping malls. Other attractions include the beautiful River Dee, the recently restored Grosvenor and Cheshire Military Museums, a Roman Amphitheatre, the beautiful Grosvenor Park and the city’s famous Roodee Racecourse.

Manchester is the retail capital of the North West and it has been described as the place to come for top fashion in the UK. Designer outlets, high-street chains, boutiques, specialists, markets... whatever you need or want, you'll find it in the city. Liverpool city centre boasts some of the largest, big name High Street stores in the country, while Albert Dock houses some of the cities trendiest stores together with a number of art shops and gallery outlets.

  Theatre

Manchester has a wide and varied selection of theatres dating back to the 19th century, such as the impressive Opera House and Palace Theatre, to the Modern design of the 1990's Bridgewater Hall. Liverpool has more museums and art galleries than any other UK city outside London and has long played a leading role in the formation of the world’s popular music culture since the groundbreaking days of the 1960s.

GOLF

Hillside

There are eight Top100 seaside courses between St Annes and Liverpool and many people believe that this is the best stretch of linksland in the British Isles. It is certainly England’s links golfing Mecca and Hillside is one of the best. It is an underrated gem, separated only by a footpath, but hiding in the shadow of its noble next-door neighbour, Royal Birkdale. The homeward nine is really special and is frequently bracketed alongside Ballybunion because the holes ripple and undulate through the giant dunes.

Royal Liverpool

The Open Championship returns to Royal Liverpool in 2006. Hoylake, as it is called, has a long and illustrious history of playing host to the Open, and has hosted ten, its first in 1897 and its most recent in 1967. Founded in 1869, Hoylake is the second oldest seaside links course in England – only Royal North Devon is the more senior. Without doubt, Royal Liverpool is a tough links. Only a couple of holes are in the dunes – otherwise there is little protection from the ever-changing wind. It represents a traditional, genuine test of golf and will examine the very best players.

Formby

. Formby is the prettiest of the eight top-notch links courses located between the seaside town of St Annes and Liverpool.  It is bordered on three sides by pine trees, giving the links a softer, heathland feel than the others. Play Formby when you have been sufficiently beaten up by the other windy links courses around Liverpool and Southport, but don’t be fooled into thinking that this course is easy. Bunkering is strategic, the undulating fairways are very links-like, the rough is strewn with heather and the pines provide an element of park-like protection from the wind.

Hesketh

Hesketh, the oldest club in town, is at one end of the magnificent long stretch of long sand dunes, nature's gift to Southport which has lead to the creation of several of Britain's greatest courses in just one small area. Established in 1885, Hesketh is part-links, part-parkland, and a mighty challenge with half the holes weaving through the dunes, the other half bordering the Ribble estuary. Professional championship golf has been played on these famous old links from the club's earliest days and today it is regularly used as a final qualifying course when the Open is played at Royal Birkdale
